I would love to hear from those ATS'ers that are fascinated with ancient history as to what there favorite " historical " T.V or movie was .
Myself , I really enjoyed Rome , the T.V series and as for movies , I loved Frank Miller's 300 , even if it had a " fantasy " element to it .

WOW
Where to start
I have been a fan of these type of shows for as long as I can remember.
300 was excellent, but the actual historical account was far more exciting in my opinion.
I love The 10 Commandments.. Great acting and a superb storyline. The special effects are not up to today's standard, but they were state of the art
back then.
Troy, with Brad Pitt had the whole package as well.. Great story and action and special effects.
But perhaps Alexander was my favorite of all time.

'Little Big Man" (the only "western" to ever show gender-bending amongst native peoples).
"Philedelphia" and recently I saw "Goya's Ghosts". It really haunts me.

Thank you
Subtitles don't bother me a bit. In fact I've discovered some great classics by making it a point to watch movies that are in different
languages.
I'll watch that tomorrow

Seinfeld, Larry David majored in history, and when he was with the show there were many hilarious history references. Seinfeld rocks.

Goya's Ghosts centers around the painter Goya during the Spanish Inquisition and the Revolutionary French period. Goya becomes more of an observer,
especially of the opportunist Lorenzo, who first heads the tortures of the Inquisition, and later becomes the leader of the atheistic French
revolutionary invasion of Spain.
Those investigated by the Inquisition are "put to the question" through torture whereby they will confess to anything, although the church's logic
is that God will give the innocent the strength to withstand the tortures. This was quite an important question around 2004/2005 when the USA used
rendition and torture in its "war on terror".
There are many websites on the film. Wikipedia has a very average synopsis that doesn't quite do the film and the topical questions it raises justice

Another must-see take on history is "Breakfast on Pluto" about an Irish transgender drag queen who lives through the violent politics of the 1970s.
However, the troubles of reality play second fiddle to her fantastical make-up and wardrobe. Excellent scenes and a killer soundtrack:

As far as prehistoric themes go, I was personally very disappointed by 10, 000 BC (although some of the dreadlocked actors come from Cape Town, and
I've seen one a few times on my campus). The mammoths look like bunnies when they run. The unsurpassed classic of the genre is Quest for Fire, and
just looking at the images gets me all nostalgic for the 1980s and excited. The period also brought us the main historcal film classics - Amadeus and
The Mission.
(For some reason the Wiki addresses above linked me to the movies, but here they link to the books - oh well, the titles are there for anyone
interested in viewing the films.)

10,000 BC??? Really?
A lot of good ones were mentioned.
I'd add the two Elizabeth movies also...and there are tons of excellent WWII movies.
I'd also add Cleopatra to the list...

The Tudors is a good show about Henry VIII. I believe it is a joint Canadian/Irish made show.
Rome is my favourite though. I heard they were doing a movie to, in effect, finish off the series. Apparently, the series was written to last
several seasons. When they got word that there would only be two seasons, the writers compressed the story greatly to the point where they left a
whole bunch out. I hope they come through with this.
HBO Chairman Chris Albrecht announced in a July 2006 news conference that season two of Rome would be its last, citing the fact that the series
(called "notoriously expensive" by Broadcasting & Cable) had been developed under a two-year contract with the BBC that would have been difficult
for the BBC to extend due to the series' cost.[25][26] Of the storyline, co-creator Heller said:[27]
“ I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end. The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and
fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second
season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the
end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around. ”
In a 27 February 2008 interview with Movieweb.com, actor Ray Stevenson stated that a Rome film was in development, with Heller working on a
script.[28] Heller later confirmed in December 2008 that there was "talk of doing a movie version," adding that "It's moving along. It's not
there until it is there. I would love to round that show off."[27]
