Have you ever had a nickname?

Just a random thought...why does it seem like some people have nicknames and some people don't?

Me personally...I have had many nicknames. Almost every "group" I have joined I get a nickname. I don't ask for one, I don't suggest one, I just end up getting one and being called that instead of my real name. And none of my nicknames are similar at all...they are all unique. They aren't degrading or insulting...just completely random. The other odd thing is that most of the time I am the only one in the group that has a nickname. Even within some groups I am called one nickname by some people and a different nickname by other people within the group. Even some of my past bosses call me by my nickname...still to this day even if I haven't seen them in years.


I never really thought about it...until I was just sitting here waiting for a program to run. Just wondering if anyone else out there is the same way or knows of someone that is the same way.

Maybe you come across as an easy-going guy, so people are more apt to think you would respond positively to a nickname.

From my personal experience, I know that I'm more likely to call an affable person by a nickname than I am an uptight person.

Ever since football I have had a nickname of "Krog", it kinda' sticks, and many people (not affiliated with my past in football) still call me that, I like it actually.

Interesting, I always wanted a nickname and never got one. I have 3 children my younger two have nicknames but its so hard to come up with a nick name for my oldest who is almost just like me in both terms of looks and personality.
it does make me wonder.

I always thought I'd call my son a shortened form of his name.....but the first time I saw him after he was born he became "Doodle."

No idea why, but it seems to fit. So he answers more to Doodle than his real name.

I do think we give nicknames to those we love, like, or appreciate....so having lots of nicknames must mean you're a likeable fella'

Be careful folks about giving out your personal info to possible data agents working for big brother.

"Bug". My older brother started calling me that when I was little. Only a couple of family members still call me that now but it's seldom.

My husband seems to acquire quite a few nicknames for some reason. Me and his mother are probably the only ones who call him by his real name.

Well, over the years I've had a few. One I won't repeat. But the more creative ones I had was when I was in the Navy, which I joined just after college. I served on a sub for two years after I finished my training in cryptology. I was no older then most of the enlisted men on board when I served. Sub duty is unique in that you may not see sunlight for 6 months. For me the longest stint was 3 months, but we always knew that could be extended if the situation required it. I made an effort to get to know each member of the crew, all be it in an oblique manner.

For some reason I have never figured out, numerous members of the crew sought me out. They needed to talk and wanted to talk to me. There were a few officers, but most of the people who wanted to talk were enlisted men. (this is before women were on subs). I got the following nicknames for the following reasons: "The mother hen", I have a need to help people and I can listen, and if required be an advocate(hence my moniker arbiture) to the boats commanding officer.

Excaliber- I took a few fencing lessons when I was 12 years old.
Angst- If some one on the boat was depressed, I got depressed.
Whisky, 0/0. I never drank.
The Star Trek guy- I love science fiction. I was also able to improve the boats sensor performance one time, by creating an improved signal interagation protocol.
Lets not forget, "The smart ass"- self explanitory

Exactly, I was going to say the same thing. Why would anyone care if we had a nickname and what it was, I don't trust the OP...mods, please move this to BTS...it belongs there...

Yes...I'm creating a database of nicknames of ATS members...because that would be so valuable.

People need to take the paranoia down just a little bit. If this is in the wrong section...it can be moved I have no problem with that. I was browsing this section when the thought popped into my head...so this seemed as good a place as any.

I just thought it odd that some people aquire nicknames and some don't...and it appears I'm not alone on it either. But you can label me whatever you want...I don't mind. Just another nickname...right?

I guess iI cheer people up with all the truths Ive been spewing lately about the economy, the country in general.

I like all the replies...I think it is interesting that there are others that seem to aquire multiple nicknames or know of others that have lots of nicknames.

I am a pretty laid back guy...so maybe that is why I get a lot of nicknames. It's funny that with my kids they all have names that have common nickname versions...but we only call our middle child by his nickname...the other two we use the full name. I don't know why really...it just kind of worked out that way. But the all have non-name related nicknames too (skittle, coco pop, and roo).

Don't worry guys...I'm not tracking all of you by your nicknames

Lots of names, usually with the word "Russia" or "Russian" in it.

I've had a million nicknames...mostly phonetic variations of the original that people heard differently...not bad and though I have tried to keep the past nicknames away from new people I have met I actually don't mind it...

Not listing them though...

oh nicknames,I have a whole load of them,my brother keeps givin me new ones all the time,and I do the same,and its not like "give and forget" he keeps callin me some of them.

ok mostly its weird nicknames,which does not give much meaning,like furniture names.. LOL ,yes thats right.
