Deceased ATS friends? How will we know?

Topic started on 26-1-2010 @ 08:38 PM by halfoldman

I've wondered about this a lot, now that Internet and blogging are such realities.
It goes way beyond my beloved ATS. It could be facebook, twitter...whatever.
But when I face my "great truth" how will people know? How will ATS know?

Apologies for being on a bit depro subject.
The San (Bushmen) used to to be expert trackers, and they would know when the wind blew the tracks away.
But how will WE now?

Good question. I believe that a lot of people here at ATS are also friends on sites like Facebook, twitter, myspace etc. So say for instance I was to meet my untimely end, those closest to me would (probably) post something on my Facebook page such as "rest in peace you jerk" and from that the people from ATS that I am also friends with on FB would see it and post here to let other people know that this jerk has moved on to the unknown.

My husband already knows to post on all my sites if I should pass. He has all my passwords.

Well, that all means to me literally that you simply don't know.
But to come with a more radical idea - isn't that one form of what Richard Dawkins called the "meme", and the perpetual idea of ourselves makes us live on when when "we" are gone?

Explanation: S&F!

I've made provisions for that in my will and testament!

Personal Disclosure: My chosen Executor will have both the power and the required resources to post my obituary under my various website Avatar names/profiles that I masquerade as online!

P.S. I highly recommend that other ATS members do likewise.

If something were to happen to me,I have a relative on ATS,he would
let others know. Then I know the party could go into full swing celebrating
my departure.

You know this is all so wonderful, and mind-blowing if you think of it.
The fact that people from totally different places and cultures can communicate like this.
And my granny with whom I had so many beautiful days, is still alive at 90. yet she refuses to learn or use any of this - she won't even send an sms.
I have real friends, but when I'm on ATS I feel I also know people.
Of course I only "know" them as much as the last thread.
When some one dies in this community?
Good question.

I think we need a personal news page to pass on info about members deaths or severe illnesses. Just post the info and leave no room for rants etc. There are many here I would like to know were something bad to happen to them, kind of my web alterfamily if you will.

Not to sound odd or depressing or anything, but would any of you really care if I passed? I mean... Really? At the end of the day, to you, I'm just another guy on a forum that you frequent. It's not like I invented the site or anything; I'm just another guy. You'd probably not know about it if I met my untimely demise.

Have to agree with you on the most part!

Some members don't have facebook etc, or are even close to anyone! as sad as it would be for anyone to go, familiar or otherwise!

Coincidence, I was thinking about this last week!

I've noticed the absence of a lot of familiar 'faces' over the last few months. I don't expect they have all died, their circumstances may have changed or they might have just got bored of ATS.

I wish people would take the time to leave a comment on their profile page to say that they will not be back, just so we'd know they were ok.

It's sad to think that some may be seriously ill or dead.

Some of my friends here have been banned - if they've opened up a new account using a different name I'd love it if they let me know.

If I dropped off the perch tomorrow I've got a friend here who might let people know, but I doubt he'd think of it.

I say we hold an online seance every month or so, see if any members come through.

In all seriousness though, it is a interesting question... I recently checked up on someone who's last thread made them seem completely unhinged, something about a 'thing' went into their brain.. they didnt come back online for a week afterwards so I messaged them. Im such a good samaritan.

maybe we should have registration every morning, and if you dont turn up ontime for atleast 6 weeks your dead or you dont use thsi site enough for us to care if you are or not lol.

Its touchy subject but we need abit more trust in ATS tell each other our names and if we are worried just search his name.

What an interesting thought and one I have considered...especially in light of Shots passing.

I haven't u2u's from people who were wondering where I went and that was after a month or so...

The deathswitch.com deal seems brilliant. When I get on in years I may register there...don't want to jinx anything yet...
