www.saint-mike.org...
The term “hooking up” originated in porn magazines in the early ‘90’s, but then rapidly made its way into campus culture. A “hook-up” is
generally understood to be a random sexual encounter with no subsequent obligation or involvement between the parties.
It's been quite a while since I attended University and there did seem to be a fair amount of "hooking Up" but back then it was refered to as
"scoring"
I still spend a fair amount of time in off campus bars and beerjoints playing in various bands here in the sunny SW. And what I have noticed is that
young people haven't lost interest in sex in the least.
Far be it for me to judge anyone, being an unrepentant hedonist myself, but there is a certain amount of danger in getting hammered and indulging in
unprotected shenanigans. Please be careful out there!
The American youth culture to me seems to be moving very fast in most
all respects. Fast cars, fast talk, instant communication via iphones.
Is there an inherent danger in the Psychology of cramming as much into life as humanly possible? I think so. But actually I'm old school, and find
much enjoyment in lifes subtleties that can be missed if moving too fast.

There are so many potential inuindos in your thread, I can't stop laughing.
To get away from that though, life is short you got to live it while you can, not piddle around watching paint dry.
Hook-up as much as possible, and still live a great life.
To add a good quote:
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts,
build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure,
program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Hmm, I think it is long overdue that I go back to college and finish my degree!
Promiscuity in college is as non-news as stating "zOMG! There's alcohol at college?!?!"
Basically, in addition to pointing out that casual sex occurs at college (gasp! who knew?) the article is promoting a book that says casual sex in
college is dis-empowering to young women because it leaves them feeling weak.
Hmmm.
Although there are plenty of concerns and worries one must face when pursuing casual sex, dis-empowerment seems to be the least of one's worries.
Murder, Date Rape, STDs, Homemade Porn (the greater majority of college age kids have made at least one apparently) and how it can kill your future
career, etc. would all seem far greater arguments to convince people to stop being promiscuous while at college. However, I guess such topics are so
overdone that you need a unique new idea to promote a book deal these days.
Sex does not have to equal love. Love does not have to enter the equation at all (although arguably it is far more enjoyable when love is part of the
equation, but that's not the subject of this book and thread). I think younger generations who don't have the same stigmas about casual sex don't
have the problem of unintentionally mixing the two as the author of the book seem to think.
This really seems to be a case of Old School Feminist criticizing Nu Skool Females for something from 2 generations removed appears to be
dehumanizing, disempowering, but spend some time talking to teens and young adults and I think they will have dramatically different views than this
author takes on disposable hook-ups.
Actually, I know a couple of Old School Feminists who would be praising the Goddess if they knew that they could get a NSA (No Strings Attached)
hook-up in 30 minutes or less with a single-text message or Craigslist post, and that they could kick the guy to the curb totally guilt-free once they
got what they wanted without them wanting to talk or cuddle! Not a single one of them would think it was disempowering or made them feel weak.
Sounds to me like the author hooked-up with someone she liked at college, got emotionally attached, found out they didn't reciprocate those feelings,
and so they saw a "pandemic" of this happening, to justify their own experience.
I guess anyone with a blog is a writer these days.

I guess I should have know that this thread, even though a serious
inquiry about the youth culture would wind up in BTS.
Thanks for Academic take on it fraterormus.
I guess anyone with a blog is a writer these days.
Yep, same as replying in a Thread on BTS.

To find as much pleasure in life as possible, I think that's an inclination for a very selfish lifestyle, and a sure recipe for disaster if all of
humanity will think that way, fortunately, we all haven't got to that point yet.
We should be dedicating our lives for others not only when we like it, that's what's living is all about. To put a smile on someone's face, not
just to another sexually attractive member of the opposite sex, but to everyone, including people who can't do us any favors..

Well there is a time and place for everything. If you're 16 and want to stay with the same person for the rest of your life you are missing out. But
if you are old enough to say "back in my day" and are still hanging out in a younger person's bar then you are now that creepy old guy/person that
hangs out in the off campus bar and drools over the younger crowd and you have your own set of problems

Actually I wouldn't call playing in the house band as "hanging out"
I have no control over where the band is booked and I really need the money, And I assume that
you are probibly to young to hang out in campus bars because, you would know that, not only are students there; but faculty, staff, townies and yes,
creepy old guys.
yes, I do have my own set of problems but chasing younger women isn't one of them.
Welcome to ATS.....oops, nevermind, I see you have been banned.

College is just Highschool Version 2.0 in terms of the bad habits that people pick up while there. I'm far more concerned about sexual activity
among highschoolers and earlier than I am about moronic drunk college kids getting off to some horrible pop song in a sweaty grab-fest with some other
equally stupid drunk. Most of the upcoming generation already is screwed in the head from their so-called schooling so why should college really be
any different?

I think that, as with most things in life, there needs to be a balance in all of this. I go to ASU (That statement alone speaks volumes to my
credibility on this issue.) I'll be honest - the main campus of that college disgusts me. It is unbelievable how much crap is flying around at that
school (purportedly one of the houses has the highest concentration of syphilis anywhere in the nation.) Although I don't feel that you need to be
madly in love with anyone you decide to have sex with, the psychological implications of continual random hookups are grossly underestimated in our
society today. I am in now way some old-fashioned republican who believes that everyone needs to wait until marriage to have sex, but at some point
we have to stop and think about the reasons that such a negative stigma is placed on something in the first place. If there's no logic behind it, we
move on. If there is, then we should probably heed the warnings. It just frustrates me the way that we stomp all over everything in our culture. We
never think about the consequences until it's too late. I see frat boys running rampant thinking that they can just have sex with any hot girl who
walks by. Then, when one of the "hot girls" actually has the common sense to turn one of these guys down because she's intelligent enough to have
more than sex one her mind, what's the next course of action for the moron? Get her drunk! Slip something into her drink so that she CAN'T say no!
I mean, who is she to say no anyway? It's not like sex means anything anyway, and she's hot, so where's the harm? Seldom do these guys get
caught, either. I've seen it myself. They were both drunk...he says it was consensual...where's the evidence?
Just as a disclaimer, I'm certainly not saying that everyone who enjoys random hookups will resort to date rape. This is kind of an emotionally
touchy subject for me because of some people I'm very close with.

Having only one "hook-up" (at least with a co-ed student) in my first two years of college (subsequent years of college are since my wedding vows),
I can say that for me, I was looking for more, but she wasn't at the time, so I simply went with it (being a horny teenager at the time).
Promiscuity doesn't mean you don't use protection though, and I did. Just because I wanted a good time didn't mean I was stupid. I didn't want to
be a daddy, nor did I want to pick up any kind of "condition"...and she was very girl-next-door type, but who knows (after all, she was into
one-nighters)....
As people said, time and place for everything. Was kind of funny, at the time I wanted a relationship, but I seemed to get aggressive (or slightly
inebriated) gals wanting one-nighters right off the bat...(at that time)...
These days....this wouldn't be for me, even if I was single again.
