Need computer help!

Topic started on 26-4-2009 @ 09:12 AM by Alexander the Great

I wasn't sure where to put this so feel free to move it.

I have a small window of opportunity to make this post and hopefully get some answers quick!

Yesterday my computer was fine.

Today when I started it up, it kept locking up and freezing.

I don't know what it could be, because all I do is come on here, youtube, or play battlefield 2 every once in while.

I don't have any Virus protection, so im wondering if it could be a virus.

When the lock ups occured, weird things happened.

Sometimes the comp itself beeped, and I had to shut it down from the back switch.

after that, when it locked up the bottom bar (start, time, etc) changed and looked like an older version of windows (I think 98) I dont know why.

Again, I restarted it, and let it run without touching it, I was able to click on my browser and all of a sudden and few icons disappeared. (Trash bin, browser)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It looks like the conficker virus has started to take effect.

It could be a virus, but it sounds like over heating too. Download SpeedFan so you can monitor your temps. Could be video card or memory.

When the PC beeped, how many beeps was it, and roughly how long was the beep? These beeps are actually codes that tell us what part of the PC is having trouble.

It was one beep.

The weird thing about this, is that it's running perfect now.

If I have the conficker Im going to cry, because without this machine, I won't know what's going on at ATS!

Or the world for that matter!

But how does the conficker infect?

I don't download anything, or go on porn, etc.

Just ats and a game.

It cant be over heating, that happened a couple months ago and got it fixed, I have brand new fans and stuff.

Video card is pretty new, hard drive is new, mother board is new as well.

And if I download the temp thing, what should my temps be at?

Oh and another thing, It started to work when I had a small chance to do something, I ran my registry fix, and it's fine now but I'm afraid to turn it off lol,

The beep is what is bothersome. For one thing you can check your motherboard for swollen and leaking capacitors. They should be flat on top.

Maybe you have a motherboard with defective capacitors?

Maybe your power supply is simply going bad, and isn't providing reliable voltage to your system? That might be a source of some problems right there.

Sounds like you have a lot of fairly new parts. Get that power supply checked out, maybe first thing.

And, you could have an infection going on at the same time.

Yeah, the computer usually runs a POST (Power On Self Test) that usually beeps once to indicate all is well.
