Networking Vista 64 to Xp home?

Oh yes.. It's the season of buying new equipment to make working slicker,faster and more efficient..

OR to spend two days on bleedin techie forums trying to find out how to get an effin basic home network system set up.

Setup.
I bought and installed a gigabit network card in my old one.(xp) working...
Bought the right cable and wired both pc's together..working ...
Downloaded and installed a patch for xp that's supposed to help...working

Setup the network on the Vista pc.. ERMM NOT working..

It managed quite happily to bypass the XP System to access the net.. it even got to validate vista/update etc...So the 'hardware is all working..

But in the 'network centre' it just shows itself .. twice.. one folder leading to the demo media files.

NO XP SYSTEM to be seen.

I disconnected from the net(just pulled out the USB wireless receiver) and disabled both firewalls.
I made sure folders(and even one whole drive) was 'shared and available'

Now I'm down to manually typing in IP addresses in the Vista machine (same as xp +1) as described in one forum...This of course lost the web connection on the Vista machine..but still no access to the XP one..

I think I need the wonderfully clever chaps in here to help me out before my head explodes.. Or I start 'Reprogramming' both machines with a large inanimate object.

Totally shameless boot of this thread,as I have still had ZERO luck on getting my P.C's to speak to each other.

I even went out and bought a USB TO USB Easy transfer cable,but the software doesn't like 64bit and I can't find an alternative.

Programs were transferred manually using 2 8gb keyring sticks..
You can imagine how long it took to move 1,500gbs of info.

Could you explain better the way things are connected?

From what you said, it looks like you have (or had) the XP machine connected to the Internet and this machine is sharing the Internet connection.

You made a second connection to the Vista machine, and it got access to the Internet, showing that the hardware was working, but the XP machine did not appeared on the network for the Vista machine.

Is this how things are?

If it is, how are the network cards configured, are both configured to get an IP address from the the DHCP server?

Yep you got it.

XP is net connected.. works.
Both have gigabit network cards.

Vista PC is wired up to the XP PC ..and is connected to net..(through xp pc).


Both Pc's are named to same network name.

After that ..ermm I dunno.
I was hoping they'd know what to do themselves after that..

I thought the XP one would appear in 'my network connections' or something obvious.

I did the 'ping thing' and it can see it.. and the XP pc 'name'.

I just don't know how to see it (files/drive/folders in Vista.. or vice versa.

Have you tried mapping a drive yet?

Are you using XP's Internet connection sharing?

If you are then the second network card on your XP computer has a different (internal) IP address, and you should use that IP address as the gateway for the Vista machine.

Try to disable the Window firewall (if you are using it) on the second network card (the one connected to the Vista machine).

As I am going to sleep now, don't expect an answer from me in the next hours.

This may seem silly, but.....

Do you have a router, seperate or in the modeum???

If you extra ports on the modem?

if not, here is what i suggest:
1) "IF" you have a router, purchase a small 4-5 port switch.
One wire from the xp comp, one from the vista (:puke rig and one from the modem.
If you want to share between the computers, have you shared the folder/drive you want???

2)If you don't have a router, purchase one with a 4 port switch in it, then follow the previous instructions.

I'm using a buffalo wireless usb transmitter which goes to the orange livebox for the xp net connection.

The other one I named 'studio network' on both systems.

Connection is via a 'proper pc to pc network cable' ... supposedly. lol

Both network cards are 'gigabit' ones.

NO router.. that was the next plan if all else fails,

I'm guessing the XP internet connection is shared as Vista64 is connected to net too.

What is 'mapping a drive?
Is it like enabling sharing?

So, you have Vista and XP pc's connected together via a crossover cable.

The internet connection appears to be working properly via Internet connection sharing.

You are having trouble sharing files though.
File sharing is a seperate and additional step.

To share files you have to enable file sharing, on both Vista, and XP(and set file permissions if desired).


So that you are aware, most people, (if this is a long term proposition), purchase a 4 port router, and plug the network cards from each pc directly into the router, instead of plugging them into each other with a crossover cable. (i)This would still require setting up file sharing.(/i)
