It has been a traditional way of marrying people in India and in many other countries. Of course, it is not acceptable for our modern Western values. But it is sometimes very difficult to challenge traditions. It is highly Illegal in the USA

A quick look at the map shows that Greenfield, CA is no coastal town. It is over a hundred miles from the coast, on the western side of the San Joaquin Valley, a small farming community. No indication of what race the father and daughter are. Considering part of the payment was beer, and the guy marrying the daughter is 18, could be any race, most likely a white guy. Sixteen should be able to marry an eighteen year old. There is only two years difference.

Holy crap, what that's a feat of epic proportions. I know, it's not a good thing he did and he should be ashamed, but gosh, you have to admire the deal. 100 cases of beer?

Not entirely accurate. 14 is legal in several states with parental approval. Alabama and New Hampshire, for example. A few others.



Sixteen would be legal in most states. But the article states she was 14, which isn't legal in quite as many.



...if there is a failing here...it's not one of morality. It's a failure to understand that "legality" and "morality" are different things, and that things like marriage age and how old one must be to be legally considered an "adult" are completely arbitrary and cultural and have nothing to do with morality. Yes, many americans would jump on their neighbors and accuse them of being immoral fiends for trying to marry a 14 year old girl...completely oblivious to the fact that it's completely legal and accepted in several states, and much of the rest of the world.

To put this whole thing into perspective...if the people involved had simply hopped into a car and spent a few hours driving, it would not have been illegal.

Sadchild, you need to learn how to read charts. The UN link shows the U.S. rape rate to be third in the world. Sure, SA looks good on reports, because they punish the victims not the rapists.

European rape rates are on the drive, and immigration is driving that, as has been well documented.

All this does is show that the U.S. does a lot better job of documenting rape rates.

S Africa has the highest reported rates, but if the real numbers were out, the numbers would be far different.

Heck, in the ME they sell 8 year old girls into sexual slavery, and kidnap them from other countries.

Whether or not it was acceptable by their culture, they still must follow the laws of the USA when they decide to live here. This applys even if our laws and system of law are imperfect. Selling a kid for 16K and some beer doesnt sound like an arranged marriage. It sounds more like selling human beings for profit.

A typical arranged marriage, unless I'm mistaken, involves two families getting their kids together for whatever reason be it traditional ties, social status elevation, financial gain fpr the both families. Not a drunk selling his little girl to some pervert for a case of Pabst.

In regards to rape, in some states the woman can say "no" up until the point of orgasm and it would be still considered rape. so good luck out there guys (and girls).

To the OP, I guess this is the modern dowry for child brides now? Instead of gold, wine, and half your herd of goats a man is expected to pony up beer, Benjamins, and already processed meats. As the father of a little girl, let me say I hope the guy is someone's bride while in jail. I'd kill any man who even looked at my daughter if she was 14, let alone tried to purchase her.
