Subject: Baby Carrots
The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages
carrots for IGA, METRO, LOBLAWS, etc.
The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made
using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a
machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots . most people
probably know this already.
What you may not know and should know is the following: once the carrots
are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution
of water and chlorine in order to preserve them (this is the same
chlorine used your pool) since they do not have their skin or natural
protective covering, they give the m a higher dose of chlorine.
You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator
for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots, this is the
chlorine which resurfaces. At what cost do we put our health at risk to
have esthetically pleasing vegetables which are practically plastic?
We do hope that this information can be passed on to as many people as
possible in the hopes of informing them where these carrots come from
and how they are processed. Chlorine is a very well known carcinogen.

You know whats disturbing? I just bought some of these - from the Organic Section.....and....while i was chopping some up last night for Dinner, I had
some with this white covering on them - I threw them out since I didnt know what it was....
No more baby carrots for this Carrot.

and it is true..
I dont like when my kids swallow pool water.. makes me nervous knowing it is being used to process the carrots. I am with you ladies.. no more baby
carrots in this house.

The silly thing is, why are we buying these in the first place?
Have we really become so lazy that we can't buy regular carrots and make carrot sticks ourselves..???

Yes- why chop them and scrape off that bitter peel when we can buy them all pretty and glossy in the bag? It IS too damn hard to chop up our own.
Actually, I don't buy them, but it is because I am frugal and it is always cheaper to buy the whole stuff that you have to wash and chop. You pay
less for more product by doing the work. I didn't know about the bleach, though, with the baby carrots. It is scary because I feed our carrots to the
guinea pig too. I am always concerned about what I feed my child, of course, but Piggy's body is so tiny and the dose of chlorine for him would be
huge.

You know- when I was in Korea they told us to soak all produce we bought downtown in bleach water solution because it is grown in "night soil"
(human fertilizer). I chose to just avoid the local produce because I was worried about ingesting bleach. Ironically, I have consumed millions of
baby carrots over the years.
