6-foot lizard captured in Oregon

GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- An Oregon man playing in the yard with his toddler sons captured a 6-foot-long lizard capable of killing pets and injuring humans.

Ryan Nelson said he thought it was a crocodile when he first spotted the Nile monitor by the rose bushes.

If a Nile monitor lizard escaped from a zoo it would be reported fairly quickly. There have been no reports from local zoos about such an escaped lizard. Wich begs the question, who the heck would keep a 6 ft. lizard than can eat you as a pet, and then not report it when it escapes??!!!

It's sad but true, people have these as pets and don't realize how large they get. They also don't realize the care and expense involved in maintaining a large reptile like this.

When they find they can no longer care for them they set them loose in the wild.
