Blade Runner
Solaris...both American and Russian versions. The original by Tarkovsky is touted as his response to 2001...slow, dreamy, moody, haunting.
Also by Tarkovsky...Stalker. Warning...Tarkovsky movies are not for Friday nights.

War of the Worlds (The original... the intro narration by Sir Cedric Hardwicke
was great)
The Thing (John Carpenter's remake)
The Aurora Encounter (It featured a nice little alien who befriended some kids)
Alien (and Aliens)
Signs (kidding...that movie sucked! M Knight Shamalan is a doofus.)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Predator

I still cant believe that no one said Dune... the original one wasnt that good but the remake is awesome. Frank Herbert's the man. Seriously if
you've never watched it you need to you wont regret it.

of help from stranded aliens...
Yes, that was a great, underrated movie!

I don't know if this qualifies as typical space travel, but I really like Stargate. Good story, good special effects, and I liked the way they dealt
with the origins of Egyptian culture. For scariest, I'd have to say Event Horizon or Alien. Also, loved 2001 & 2010. As for recent stuff there was
a movie called Sunshine. Kind of a sleeper, and no aliens, but a very cool movie. For my favorite "space" movie that none of my friends get, the
aware goes to Solaris. I don't know why, but this movie really got to me.

Well guys there has been so many movies with aliens in them i had to look at this en.wikipedia.org... to pick just a few of my absolute faves (in no particular
order).
Close Encounters
Cocoon
E.T
The Forgotten
Indipendance Day
The Sphere
Event horizon
Alians 1 2 and 3
Space Balls
Fire in the Sky
2001
2010
Coneheads
Men In black
The Fifth Element
Mars Attacks!
H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds
The Chronicles of Riddick
Predator
The Best one of them all for me has got to be Close Encounters.
If there is gonna be some kind of Alien Contact in the future thats how it would happen imo.

The Andromeda Strain was a movie first, before The Scott's ruined it. Authored by Michael Crighton of Jurassic Park fame.
My favourite Sci Fi movies: Close Encounters, Day the Earth Stood Still (new one looks good, weary though), Alien and Aliens, Contact, Independence
Day, E.T., Dune, list goes on.
And on TV: Space 1999, HitchHikers Guide, ST TNG , Lost, Heroes, anyone remember the Intruders from the ealy 90's?
What about worst? The Invasion was terrible.
