The Mystery Computer

Hey guys, I thought I'd share some anomolies about my comp.

I'll first start off by telling you about my system. I have a Dell with XP Home edition and a pentium II prossesor. No special bells and whistles, just a pretty much a clunky junky machine.

1. It has no ping, yep that's roght, ping does not exist on my comp, however I'mm able to connect to the internet.

2. It doesn't have gpedit.

3. It doesn't have wordpad.

4. It doesn't have a calculator.

5. It does'nt have sound recorder.

6. When I first got it, it didn't have any profile on the login screen, infact there used top not be a login screen, but it created a profile for me one day without me knowing it (it was not connected to the internet at the time) and gave me a cute picture of some horses as my profile pic.

7. It turned it's self one one day.

8. It lacks various programs that are essential for it to operate, but it's working just fine, I have dozens of high quality programs on it (like 3D Max, Blender, Maya, Vue 6, Lightwave ect.), it waorks just fine with them.

So what do you guys think of my computer?

got screenshots? shots which show that your pc doesn't have ping.

No sorry, this is not my computer that I'm on at the moment.
My friend Chris Ballard Used to do IT for the government, he's the one that found out that I don't have ping, he also used to be a hacker, still sorta is. He told me it's impossible for my computer to be able to connect to the internet if I don't have ping.

Well I just deleted (renamed really) my ping.exe program.. internet is still here

check C:\windows\system32\ and look for 'ping.exe'

Where did you get the computer?

edit: after renaming it, windows automatically recreated another ping.exe yours should do the same..

There used to be some virus that could hide/remove system files in a way that they could no longer be seen thru normal means.

You could usually go to the command prompt and type:

attrib -a -h -r -s c:\windows\system32\*.*

to unhide all files.




That would be the Windows File Protection Feature.
If it is turned on, it will do this.

Some virus are capable of disabling this feature and then deleting and/or replacing files with their own versions.

GPEDIT does not come with XP Home edition.

In part, because it was not designed to join a domain.

Got to: C:\windows\inf

Find wordpad.inf, or write.inf. Right click and select install.

Conversel you could locate your wordpad.exe in your servicepack files (C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386) and copy it to c:\windows\system32


Start, run, appwiz.cpl

Add/Remove Windows Components

Check Accessories.

If its already checked, uncheck it, run through the wizard and then recheck them and run the wizard again.

You may need the XP CD.

I say, unless you need those features that it is running just fine without, why worry with them. The less crud you have to deal with, especially running those awesome design programs, the better.
Not sure what version of 3DS you are running, but Max9 pushes my current system to its limit. I end up turning a lot of processes off before attempting anything complex.

Well I very rarely use max, simply because I don't like the way you have to add this or that modifier so much. I primarely use Blender for my modeling and animating.

To everyone else, I've tried accessing ping for the cmd it does not exist, at all I've searched everywhere for wordpad, it does not exist.

My computer is very strange, it's great for doing graphics, it can hadle a lot for it being such a poor computer, it has some sorta modem or something from a robotics lab in it, it's very strange.

I don't know a whole lot about the actual hardware of the computer, other than I bought it off I guy for $200 and it had a ton of porn and viruses, but i got rid of all that, I used to be pretty good at getting rid of viruses, I even did it as freelance work at one time.

I really don't need some of the things I listed that I don't have though, maybe the computer knows!!! LOL.
