Italian priest and theologian says he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns.
An Italian priest and theologian said Sunday he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns to give them more visibility within the Catholic
Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour.
The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Rev. Antonio Rungi and will give nuns from around the world a chance to
showcase their work and their image.
"Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life," Rungi told The Associated Press after Italian media carried reports
of the idea. "This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

Oh boy, just what the catholic church needs, nuns in bathing suits and talent shows on the internet.
The contest drew criticism from the association of Catholic teachers.
"It's an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God," the group's president, Alberto Giannino, told Italy's
ANSA news agency on Sunday.
You don't say.

I don't think they can be in bathing suits thou? Maybe put makeup on their pretty faces and some good poses.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.
"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi said by telephone from his town of Mondragone. "But being ugly is not a requirement
for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it."
This is too funny!
The ironic part is that there is a nun fetish fringe movement floating about the real world. They are going to have a field day with this.
I needed a good laugh. Great find!

I just don't know about this. A "beauty contest" for nuns? The very idea of focusing on physical beauty -- and as part of a competiton, to boot
-- has me agreeing with Mr. Giannino.
He hopes there will be dozens of submissions once the web site is started.
I'm guessing that some nuns with an **ahem** irreverent sense of humor might be tempted to participate, but that that temptation might last
about 3.14 seconds.
The appeal to vanity of a beauty contest would, I think, prevent any nun from submitting a photo even if she did just want to have some fun with it.

Hum, you mean 3.14159265358979323846… seconds? Why would you bring pi into a catholic nun beauty contest? My numerology/conspiracy antenna is up.
(so to speak)

What's up with the Catholic Church lately anyway? First it's okay to believe in aliens and now they want to run a beauty competition for nuns.

oh ffs. I mean really. Nun's are supposed to be celibate is it really necessary to try and use them for marketing in a obviously sexual way?
I mean beauty contests rock and all, but I find this is inapropreate. And I am not even christian.

Did you see what the priest said:
"Today it’s not like that any more, thanks to an injection of youth and vitality brought to our country by foreign girls.” He said there were

Pretty progressive priest, don't you think?

No just sounds like a normal heterosexual man to me.
A nun is not supposed to be any kind of a sex symbol. Great the lady may be beautiful, but the point of the matter is that she is supposed to be a
bride of the lord and in my opinion not paraded around on the Internet to be gawked at by those that would find this more than appealing.
I mean honestly this seems more sacrilegious than anything else.
(yes I already know it's ironic for me to be on this side of this issue)

I agree with you.
Nuns should NOT be sex symbols.
It seems that this priest is trying to change that to a very small degree.

If the church just admitted that these priests and nuns are normal, functioning, sexual human beings and allowed them a proper normal outlet for their
urges there wouldnt be so many clergy sex scandals and the religion wouldnt be in such a deep decline. Eliminate the guilt and repression and allow
these people to act human.
Congrats RCC.....welcome to the 20th century
Also....Brazillian chicks in bathing suits are hot....nun or not.

I think that's the one that whacked me with a ruler in the seconds grade.
Speaking of rulers, I wonder if demonstrating corporal punishment methods might be suitable for the talent competition.
