Hi my sister has the laptop dell 5150 where now the laptop can't even power up at all. I told her to buy a new computer since I really hate dell my sister started looking at dell and I told her what are you doing don't buy a dell and so she didn't I then checked out other laptops and found a good one for her.

Now she gave me this dell laptop since I am a computerwiz tech and decided it would be a great project to open it up ect.

I googled around for this model on manuels ect and then I stumbled over people having the same problems as what this laptop had. Then I find info about a lawsuit against dell for a design defect. If you apply pressure on the top of the laptop like where you supposed to when typing on the keyboard ect ect.

You would put pressure on a chip which would cause it at over time the connectors to break.

People in the U.S took Dell to court but faild dell didn't want to do a recall on this.

They knew about this problem before they first shipped it out and to prevent anyone from finding out they put a black tap over the chip to hopefully not draw any tech wizes to that chip. Since many can't get a good manuel or a good schematic it would be hard to even notice this chip under the tap.

So I conclude saying that you shouldn't buy a dell, because they will have hidden problems that would arise within 2 or 3 years basicly when the warrenty expires so they would take it in but would chrage you an arm in a leg for it.

So if your going for a laptop or even a desktop shopping I suggest to stay away from Dell.

I now have to take everything out in order to take the motherboard out so I can see the other side and soder and repair the problem.

I just checked out stuff they say on 9/11, I wouldn't trust anything that site says.

I had alot of people flamming me saying I just hate dell, they bealive that I am just upset with one recall that dell just called that happened to my my laptop,lol.

I kept explaining that Dell didn't even call a recall on the defective design they made.

Then I got other computer geeks that liked Dell and decided to battle at me.

I said I know computer hardware and also software, I am a programmer they said I am not one since I told them Dell makes their own motherboards.

when I said Dell makes their own motherboards I meant they design them and then pass the design to motherboard manufactorers.

So they don't bealive me they think Dell just tell the motherboard manufacotor do design them a board to fit their needs. This would be true only if I didn't see a patent on the motherboard that dell owns the patents of the moterboard which means Dell design the board.

Then they know programming so they wanted to test me thinking I am just some kid going online making stuff up ect ect.

I passed there test.

I am just saying I don't trust Dell anymore, I never even liked them in the beginning because I notice that when we bought the laptop we would get a recovery cd no OS cd.

So when I have to reinstall the OS because of critical errors I tried the recovery cd didn't do anything so I then had to have my sister call dell to ask for the OS cd and they said oh we gave you it, and were like no, so they send another rcovery cd I tried that nothing, so I just then go my copy of xp and reinstalled the OS.

I then looked at the content of th recovery cd and it only shows drivers ect.

I even seen promotion installers to install promotion demos of software on your pc.

I didn't see any os stuff.

So I just currently don't trust any pc company I from now one will build my and my families computer.

I seen lawsuits on the laptop model of Dell.

my laptop is DELL 5150 if you do a google search you will see many posts of people having the same problem I have. Then there is a person that tells us that Dell knew about the defect but never planned to do a recall they just covered the chip with some black plastic to cover up the Defect.

'that's all I can say, just shared my experience to hopefully make you guys to be more careful with Dell , they love to take advantage of people that don't know anything about computers.

I just plain out dosen't suggest anyone Dell at because of what I just saw which shows them being caught for covering a design defect and not recalling it.

This also means local repair shops will not know about this defect and would mostly tell you to replace the board but guses what it doesn't fix the problem.

It will happen again in the years to come since it's a design defect.

So I hear people spending alot of money on repairs of this model and 5 other models which has the same flaw.

PS: that chip can be bought by 8$ on EBay.

Ahh. Don't forget the famous "Flaming Dell" 5150/5160/1150 problem.

If I recall correctly, this was the subject of a class action lawsuit over in the US and apparently Dell will offered an extended warranty in the US and Holland. The problem is to do with the circutry than handles the battery charging/power and the first symptom is that the laptop moans at you for not having the correct AC adapter plugged in. Some time after this, it'll finally die as it depletes the battery and then the only thing you'll see when you plug in the AC adapter is two flashing lights (3 lights on the front lower case, lights 1 and 3 blink) which flash 10 times (again, if memory serves me right.)

I've seen quite a few of these, all exhibiting the same problem. Funnily enough, they were all P4 CPU ones. All the Celeron (draws less power, produces less heat) ones that I've come across have been with lesser problems, the odd HDD/Screen inverter problem and the usual "user has screwed up his/her OS", and you can hardly blame Dell for the latter..

You do a search on any computer model and brand and you will find problems of the same with various people.

If you are such a computer whiz than you should know this. I guess your idea of whiz is like maybe a year or so. I have twenty years experience and don't expect any computer to be die-hard no problems. Plus if you are so much a whiz than these problems shouldn't be an issue when buying a computer because you can take care of it.

I do agree with you about Dell, After they sold all their brick and mortar store and strictly sold online their customer service went to hell!

I am not complaining about Dell for having recalls or not having a computer that dosen't break.

I am complaining of them for hiding the fact.I contacted them on a chat and I have told them about the design defect they had no idea of such a defect.

They then told me my warrenty expired and said bye.

I have more than 2 years of experience with computers. I am a programmer.

I do know eveyr laptop has their own problems even sony but I have seen many stories about Dell and I conclude Dell is a macho freak they are strictly business.

Well go ahead and buy a dell and once you find out your computer had bugs and defects Dell knew ahead of time and you try fighting them then I will just say wow what a cry baby one recall and he cries all night.
