Virus's, Spyware and Malware Oh My....

Topic started on 27-7-2008 @ 03:11 PM by elevatedone

You're friendly neighborhood Moderator ran into a virus this weekend.

A nasty one that messed my PC all up.

Well Just this morning, it's finally gone. ( I hope ).

So far PC is running great.

Well except for one thing.... I can't change my display.

When I go to the control panel / appearance and themes / Display

Theres nothing that will let me work with Screen Savers, etc.

I only get:

Themes / Appearance / Settings.

The "bug"that I had, changed my desktop background to a weird blue clolr with a note centered, stating I had malware, etc. to clean it out immediately. Also a pop up program that tried to look like it was running scans and that I had 700 viruses, they wanted to sell me security.

I also couldn't do a system restore.

Now everything is back to normal, except playing with my computers display.

Any ideas how to fix that ?

Check your U2Us.

It's what I do day-in and day-out... make PCs out of what would otherwise be considered paperweights.

Not sure, but I just dealt with a similar issue. Was getting that pop-up security scanning thing. Turns out IE needed to be updated (XP Service Pack Three and some malicious software removal tool thingamabob) via Windows Update.

All's well now.

Good Luck.

el,

You may find that the virus damaged your operating system.

Just because you get rid of the virus, does NOT mean that the Operating System was repaired.

You can try doing a system restore, personally I find that only works 50% or less of the time does that work.

REMEMBER!!!!!!!, "IF" you do a restore, make sure to look to see if the virus is still there in the restore.

"IF" you have a Operating System disk NOT!!!! a restore disk, you can try check disk to help.

Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt.

Type"chk dsk /f/r"

Hit enter and answer yes to check next time you reboot.

Yep, you guessed it, reboot.

Have your Operating Disk handy as it may need it to get "non-corrupted" files to replace the damaged ones.

Let me know how it works out for you.

Yes I have an idea.

You can edit the registry manually.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

if there is a DWORD value such as "NoDispScrSavPage" with a data value of 1 this will disable your screensaver tab, change the value to 0 or delete it and your tab should be back.

Or

import restorealldisplaytabs.reg from Kellys Korner (line 285 on right)

Ref:
www.computing.net...

google screensaver tab gone

Best of Luck

In order to get into your registry edtior, click on "Start", then "Run", and then type in regedit.

While in here, I recommend being very careful and following any directions precisely. Making some mistakes here could be quite the headache to fix.

Thanks guys...

I just printed off those very instructions about the registry thing.

I'm going to try that when I get home tonight, wish me luck.
