S&M Barbie lashed by public

www.thesun.co.uk

BARBIE’S new S&M look has whipped up a storm – with protesters dubbing it “filth”.

The doll’s image is transformed with kinky fishnets, motorcycle jacket, black gloves and boots.

Makers Mattel say Black Canary Barbie, out in September, is based on a DC comic superhero of the same name.

But religious group Christian Voice said: “Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far.

A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”

This is one of those stories that is kind of funny, kind of sad, and kind of aggravating.

What is the idea behind this anyway? To encourage young girls to have a fetish?

She actually reminds me a little bit of Cindy McCain, don't ask me why.

Maybe they are trying to access a new market. These will probably start being sold in porn shops before too long.

I see Biker Barbie, or maybe Goth Barbie.

Black and leather does not = S&M

Hell I don't even think the outfit is sexually suggestive.

It's "reported" in The Sun which is a crap paper.

I would have no problem with my daughter playing with this doll.

Not much in the article but....

It does say she is 'BASED' on the DC Comic Super Hero "Black Canary.

I don't see what the big problem is.

If they are marketing it as an actual 'S&M' item then maybe yes, but I don't see any indication this is the direction they are taking.

Rock Chick Barbie.. woooo..

I don't see what the problem is..
It's a very practical outfit for motorcycling on a hot day..with helmet n knee pads

So a Barbie in a Bikini is less 'sexually suggestive'?

Sexual allusion is in the eye of the beholder

While I don't agree with Barbie doll being portrayed as some kind of tramp as kids are very impressionable, I have to admit does it really make a difference?

As a kid I played with GI Joe's and other war toys but it didn't make me grow up to be a gun wielding war monger or overly aggressive in any way.

I think it all comes down to how the parents and how they raise their children.

I'm sorry you feel that way. The choice is yours, of course, but for your child's sake, I think you should carefully consider what you are saying and what is in her best interests. Age appropriate exposure. A person needs to be grown up physically, intellectually, and emotionally before being exposed to these influences.

You can't link to material like that on this site.

The outfit may not look too bad in the photo, but I'm sure the jacket comes off and she's wearing a strapless bustier underneath. Couple that with the fishnet stockings and highcut bottoms, and it is totally inappropriate for children.

Most of us here are grownups, and I'm sure the guys wouldn't mind their wives coming out of the bedroom closet in that get up once in a while, as long as she didn't try to tie them up or whip them, but this is different.

What influences?

Sexuality? S&M? Leather? Barbie?

To me the only bad thing about "S&M Barbie" is the fact that she does not represent realistically what a woman looks like. But that's true of the Barbie brand in general.

Please say you are kidding.

Highly inappropriate..comon..

No.

What is highly inappropriate is when we hide from our children the reality of life, when we demonize biology, when we turn our children into mindless consumers, ect...

Ha ha. You're serious, aren't you?

I pity children who has to grow up with parents weak enough to find offense in this. Sure, it's tasteless but so are every Barbie doll I have ever seen. No big harm.

Explain the world to your kids in an intelligent and confident way and they'll be fine. Shield them from real life and tell them fairy-tales about god as if it was real and they will grow up to weak-minded to deal with reality.

Just like their parents.

PS: Read the website of the offended organization. It's to funny. They're still not over Jerry Springer the opera, and the fact that some cops are gay...

PPS: The Sun stinks.

Edit: Dammed deslyxia.

Where does it say that this is a S&M toy? she looks like a tough biker girl to me. Besides, the toy can be dressed like whatever, it DOESNT mean that it teaches children that you should wear those clothes.

Come on... i mean, i had He-man toys, but i dont go around running on the streets in my underwear, and i dont have swords or other medieval weapons.
Its called using your imagination when playing with the toys, and believe it or not, kids CAN tell the difference between reality and imagination. (exept maybe radical christians)

This is just stupid radical christian complain-propaganda, which i hear everytime something other people finds harmless arise.

Same here, but to be honest I have always wanted to try it but the fear of arrest and an eventual extended stay in a mental institution kept me from living the dream

Btw, this ISNT intended to be sold to little kids, as they make it seem like. I read this comment on the site:

"What this article has failed to mention is that Black Canary is a limited-edtion, Collectible Barbie doll aimed specifically at ADULTS.

She is part of range called the "Black Label Collection" which has previously featured Cher wearing black "leather" and fishnets, and is packaged & priced for adults and clearly states on the box "For Adult Collectors".
