Generations of recovering alcoholics, soldiers, weary parents, exploited workers and just about anybody feeling beaten down by life have found solace in a short prayer that begins, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.”

Almost everyone is familiar with this prayer. I have heard it used in many places, but never thought about who wrote it. The article makes some suggestions but comes with no definite conclusions. It could be centuries old.

Your source requires registering. Most won't bother.

As to "where from": AA History

I have my own version of the prayer ......

God, grant me the serentity
To accept the things I can not change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to bury the bodies of those that pissed me off !!

lol

Sorry, everyone. I registered with the NY Times a couple of months ago, so I don't have trouble accessing the links. It doesn't take much time to register and they don't ask any personal questions. Still, I think they're just discouraging readers by doing that.

Oh it's nothing to do with info, especially when I give no true info to anything that I DO sign up for. It's just one of my idiosyncrasies, I'm not signing up with a news site to get news that will be eveywhere anyway.

Sounds like you are already logged into NYT, and that is just carrying over. Just a thought.

It's no big deal to me, I've heard it all about AA/NA, including the thread a couple years ago in which AA was deemed by a few members as being a cult. Ugh.
