Craig Ferguson is a genius on many levels, but his Scottish brogue is sometimes difficult to understand.
It is evident to me that Bush did not understand Ferguson when he said "except the time that Barney (one of Bush's dogs) humped the pope's
legs."
I watched that live and I didn't understand Ferguson, either.
And when I watched the YouTube version, I had to play it back several times to understand him.
So, I think it's not that Bush was too slow to catch the joke, he just didn't hear the punch line and asked the person next to him to repeat what
was said. Whereupon, he laughed and indicated his approval of the joke.

At least President Bush wants to know what the guy said... hes got that going for him.
I wouldn't of known what he said if i hadn't read that first.

Now I get it haha, I feel slow. I guess I got confused, because I didn't know the dogs name in the first place. I usually understand all british
accents because I'm used to it, travel just a few miles here and you see a different accent haha.

Ferguson said something that to the American sounds like "the poops leeg."
Actually, taste-wise, it was a marginal joke and once the president understood, his enthusiastic response probably got Ferguson's heart to pumping
again. The press club can be a tough audience and that's not a good place to bomb.
Since Bush took office, he and Cheney have done a good job of upstaging the comedians at the press dinners.
Ferguson held his own quite well--much better than some others I've seen.
Since this one was Bush's last, I think he let out all the stops and got pretty risqué himself.
