Anyone here an electrician?

Topic started on 2-5-2008 @ 01:51 PM by thelibra

I'm looking to switch careers and possibly become an Electrician.

I've recently returned to college to go for an Electrical Engineering degree, but that's years down the road, and I have yet to take any actual electrical-related classes. Plus I figured this would give me some applicable job experience that would really help me understand the real-world applications of what I'm learning in class.

What's the best way of getting into this field? Go to a trade school like DeVry? Apprentice to a Master Electrician? Take a trade cert course? Get a how-to manual? Any help would be appreciated.

Probably an apprenticeship. They are very hands on. I tried to get into one here in the midwest a while back but the sheer number of applicants was large.

My advice is to look up your states electricians union website and then look for the nearest union hall. Then simply pay them a visit during business hours. I am sure they will have apprenticeship information posted there (if not on their website) and can explain what it entails.

They probably give you a math test and do a thorough review of your employment and even give you an interview.

You might have to pay a meager application fee, but thats about it, if you're selected.
