Poll: Parents More Appalled by Sex Than Severed Heads

Topic started on 13-4-2008 @ 12:38 PM by die_another_day

Wow =p

Perhaps as a strange demonstration of social values, those who voted in the poll reported that sexual matters of any sort were more offensive than explicit violence or profanity. The leading pick as the most offensive act in video game was “a man and woman having sex” at 37 percent. Off second place with 27 percent was “two men kissing.”

Wow... is this why we have pregnant teens and video game related killings?

Thats because most westerners cannot relate to having witnessed a real severed head. They think it is something that is not real because they have had not experience with it. Sex, on the other hand, is something most adults know about and are taught that it is at the very least taboo.

Interesting though that people don't think about which of those two are the most repulsive.

I can understand why. Sex is a subject that is going to be an issue in almost every parents home in the USA. Our children are having sex at young ages and teenage pregnancy rates are high. We don't see a severed head epidemic here now do we?

my wife used to work at a video rental store. she would frequently have people asking her if a movie had any sex in it because they didn't want their kids watching sex. she would reply "no, but it's VERY violent." they would say "oh, that's ok, i just can't let them see people having sex."

sounds pretty f'd up that something natural is taboo but killing people is ok.

[edit]

just wanted to add that maybe if kids were exposed to sex more and educated then we wouldn't have pregnancy epidemics. think of it this way: kids in america get drunk, have parties, go wild, etc because as far as society is concerned they won't drink until their 21. which is obviously naive. we had an exchange student from germany stay with us for a year. he said they don't really have as much problem with that because they can drink at 16 and it's not a big deal like it is here. point is, shielding someone from something is just going to make them more curious. i'm not saying you should sit your 10 year old in front of a porn video, but if you can manage to take away the mystery, you take away the curiosity.

It's a shame society has to make something so natural and full of life seem evil and disgusting.
I mean, think about it, where would we be without sex?

I am on the fence about this...as a parent. I agree that we need to be more open with our kids regarding sex and not make it so taboo. But I do not think they should be exposed to sex such as seeing it constantly and what not. In a video game it's different though because the characters are basically cartoonish...they are not real. Same as the characters getting their heads cut off, they are cartoonish...again not real.

I think that is the bottom line. We need to teach our children at a young age the difference between entertainment and reality. That way when they see both sex and violence in a video game and/or a movie, they won't take it so seriously in that aspect.
