I want to be the first to ask this question...

why does the police abuse thier power and beat people up and use stun guns at will?

Now see, before anyone goes judging me, Im a police supporter... I just wanted to be the first to ask that question, because we all know it was coming.

Well I would say that 85% of the time use of a taser is warranted, the rest of the time you have an officer who is afraid o getting into a fist fight or a jerk. Now for abuse of power tht doesnt happen as much as the media would like you to think (unless you are in California or New York.)

There was a story day before yesterday from Georgia as I recall. It involved the use
of a Taser by a Security Officer on a 6th grade boy. After giving the available details,
officer stopped a fight in which the boy was fighting with a girl, escorted them both
to the principals office, boy resumed attack and was tased. Then came the discussion
between the reporters and the \"on the street interviews\" and so forth as to the \"rightness\" of the Officer using the taser. Then after all of this at the very end of the
story came the clincher, the Oh we forgot to mention one minor little fact.

This 11 year old 6th grader weighs 200lbs and got up after being tased and continued
to beat this girl on the head.

No discription of the SO .

I know that there are many people who think "poorly" about the police. You know, they think that those who join the police do so because they are latent bullies or even sadistic ego maniacs. I certainly don't believe that this is the case, at least for most police officers.

Why did you become a police officer? What would you do if you ever saw another police officer go "OVER THE TOP" and abuse someone? Would you remain silent (according the "cop code" made popular in movies). Is there a "cop code" of silence when it comes to protecting a fellow officer?

This may sound corny but I became a police officer because I wanted to protect the innocent and help people. I once saw an officer in my department plant drugs on someone I preceded to break his thumb, then I removed the drugs and told him to never do it again (this may sound brutal to you but I think it was a learning experiance for him). There is a loose code of silence about half the people follow (I didnt).

what do you think of people who call the police because that's all they can do? for example...somebody gets threatned and they freak out and decide to call you guys, instead of handling it themselves. they call you and the situation gets fixed. down the road they get threatned again, call you guys, you guys save em..etc etc..

do you think the reason that some cops carry out police brutality is because deep down they know they're in a thankless profession?

I sincerely believe that you did, indeed, become a police officer because of your desire to "make a difference". I know a number of police officers and, for the most part, they are fine human beings. I also realize that the job itself exposes the men and women of the police forces to situations and experiences that, well, can make anyone "flip". It must be frustrating as all hell to see someone who should be off of the streets go through the revolving door justice system that seems to exist. Nevertheless, we all tend to forget that cops are people too even though we do hold them up to a much higher standard than the one that we have for ourselves.

Incidentally, I don't think that it's inhumane or cruel to make your point known to the fellow officer who tried to plant drugs on someone. Good for you. I hope your partner learned his lesson. But that's exactly the point I was trying to make about the criminal justice system. I can only surmise that he planted the drugs just to get someone incarcerated who deserved to be locked up.

Still, the individual cop on the street shouldn't play judge. It must be very frustrating at times.

Anyway, I salute you for your bravery and your sense of justice.

Hi,

I've heard that some officers are often predisposed to stopping or being suspicious of cars that are kinda ratty looking. Like old cars with worn out paint or cars that aren't new looking at all. Or sometimes cars that have bumper stickers on them for rock bands and stuff.

Is that true? Would you more suspicious of an old Buick with peeling paint or a brand new Escalade?

Yeah, this case does raise serious questions -- and doubts -- about the New York City Police. Poor training? Overwork? Hyper-vigilance? Racism? Trigger Happy? Lack of Control? Poor Communications? Fear? The reasons, the causes, the excuses...take your pick. They are probably endless but, nonetheless, there are reasons... some we can guess, some we can't and some...well, I bet there are some reasons that we couldn't even venture a thought towards.

What I do know is that not every many or women who dons a uniform with a promise to "serve and protect" did so just to be able to "crack heads" (no pun intended) and to pump a few 'justified' rounds into a 'perp'. Sure, like the priesthood attracts molesters, it would be likely that the police might attract the ilk who get their kicks from power or, rather, its' abuse. But this doesn't account for all of the 'good priests' or, for that matter, 'good cops'. They aren't all bad! One thing for certain, I wouldn't necessarily want to live in this society without them

Is there any big change in the law enforcement (written & unwritten) after 911?
Did the attack in the WTC drastically changed the methodology of the Police?

I would say it is the other way around I have stopped more expensive cars than anything else, usualy people with expensive cars are more cocky and tend to not obey the speed limit.

Yes it made them more aware and unfortunatly alot of the officers took 911 personally and it made them more zealous.

Why, though?
Except for NYPD, why should other departmeants take 9/11 persoannly? It wasn't personal to cops, after all.

Seems to me, many use it as an excuse to be bullies more often. To throw their weight around.
I've seen changes in the way calls are handled.
Less tolerance for situations. Less rights for citizens. If you look the wrong way at a cop or do not follow any and all orders, you are considered interfering with police and cited.

I feel citizens' rights are being ignored, while others who are doing wrong are protected.

I have been told to call the cops when there is trouble on my property and then told there's nothing that can be done when neighbors act up or strangers refuse to leave my property.
What do you think of situations where a homeowner is discouraged from being able to protect themselves and their property?

Sorry I should have been more specific in my wording. I ment the NYPD took it personally.
