Look at it this way, ancient people crossed the Bering land bridge onto Alaska. Alaska is the first place they touched. Alaska is one of the United
States of America. USA was the first country to be touched by people therefore the name goes to the people of the country that was first inhabited.
The people of the USA choose to be called Americans therefore anyone else who wants a name has to come up with something else 'cause the people of
the USA grabbed "Americans" first. Biatch!
Are you serious? That has nothing to do with anything. That is stupid, retarted, go shoot yourself, stupid. for being stupid
Wow, thanks for your input. It has nothing to do with anything? What does your post have to do with anything? Who's stupid? How 'bout the fact that
the US bought the first piece of the Western hemisphere touched by humans. The first people there get the right to name it. I know it belonged to
Russia, does it belong to Russia now? No? Then shut up.
We named our country the USA before Alaska because it's on the continent of North AMerica. We call ourselves Americans today because we have the
right to.
I don't know why I'm trying to explain this. I just throw in my two cents and get tore up by a bunch of uptight bitches with no imagination. # all
ya'll.

We're better than all those other countries so we get the America title. As soon as all those other countries stop being so lame then they can claim
the moniker. HA HA!

In some countries (e.g. Mexico) it is taught that there are 5 Continents! America (consisting of North & South America) being one of them.

Really, what difference does it make. I think that the only reason we are called Americans is tradition. The USA was the first europeanized
country in the New World to govern itself, so that was most likely the start of that particular tradition.
As a side note, to settle the "continent" debate inthis thread -
From Dictionary.com
con·ti·nent n. One of the principal land masses of the earth, usually regarded as including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe,
North America, and South America

I'm a bit confused......................
I'm a bit confused......................
Are we talking about continents, or are we talking about countries?
If we are talking about continents well, yes, there are several that have the name America in them.
Saying that Alaska does not count because the ancient settlers were Russian is also incorrect. The people that crossed the Alaska land bridge a couple
of hundred thousand years ago, were in fact almost Chinese in origin. They came from a region somewhere near the northeast tip of Siberia that is
today bordered by modern day China.
Having crossed the land bridge, they slowly colonised Northern then Central and finaly the Southern areas of what we now know as America.
They became the Red Indian Nations which the British [who later became Americans] so successfully slaughtered. (Brief natural history lesson ova
 ]
If we are talking about countries, what about us here in the Dis-United Kingdom? Why don't you include us as Americans?
God knows we've shed enough blood and done enough dirty work for you. We, the British public feel like we're Americans if only because we always
seem to be at America's beck and call.
Bush picks up the 'phone and says, 'Hey Blair..........do this for me will ya?', and that Blair says, 'Certainly Mr President. Now please
will you drop your pants and bend over again, so I can kiss your beautiful butt!?
So, friends across the pond, do we qualify as Americans or not?
OR DO WE HAVE TO REMIND THE WORLD THAT YOU ARE REALLY CLOSET ENGLISHMEN?

I thought you lived in Aruba? How do you consider that the continent? Isn't it an island.
Hawaii is part of the United States of America, but it's not included when referring to the continental US I don't think.
