(submission) (news) N Korea 'to scrap nuclear arms'

Topic started on 19-9-2005 @ 01:15 AM by 0951

North Korea has apparently signalled it's willingness to set aside nuclear weapons and return to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and the US has affirmed that it has no intention to attach or invade NK.

Pyongyang has also agreed to accept inspections by the UN nuclear watchdog.

In return, the US has declared that it has no intention of attacking North Korea and will respect its sovereignty.

This is an encouraging step forward, and could mean the start of improving relations with NK, once the pressure of the weapons threat is off.

NK still intend to pursue nuclear power for electricity generation, and the deal appears to involve aid and trade, which seems entirely fair enough, given the economic position NK is understood to be in.
