CNN: Maybach shows 700-hp concept car
May 12, 2005

Maybach, DaimlerChrysler's ultra-high-end luxury car brand, unveiled a 700-horsepower twin-turbocharged V12 concept car in Berlin today.

The Exelero is an updated version of a car created in 1938 for Fulda. That car was based on a model by the original Maybach car company, also a maker of high-end luxury cars. The original Maybach company stopped making cars during World War II, but continued to make large engines, including those used in the German Army's Tiger Tanks.

Tested on a high-speed track in Italy, the long two-door, two-seat Exelero achieved a top speed of about 218 miles per hour, the company said. There are no plans to introduce a production version of the car.

Considering the exterior of that Maybach, the interior is pretty bland. Is there any word on if and when this car will go into production, and how close the prototype will be to the real vehicle? Manufacturers often get us very excited with prototypes only to dull them down when they're finally made. I feel that Chrysler is the exception. When it comes to making awesome concepts, and quickly bringing them to production, they're the best automaker in the world. And their production cars differ very little from their original conception. Since Maybach and Chrysler are both members of the same family, hopefully they share the same mindset when it comes to bringing concepts to life.

As for the Cadillac Sixteen... awesome car! Not to sound too much like a Chrysler shill, or get off topic, but American muscle is making a big comeback! It appears that the gas crisis isn't having much of an effect when it comes to big engines and big power these days. This is evident with the success of V8, rear-wheel drive vehicles like the Chysler 300C, Dodge Magnum and Charger, etc. But this Cadillac certainly breaks the mold. If anyone here has seen Adam Sandler's new movie, "Click", he actually drives the Cadillac Sixteen in one part of the movie when they're in the future. It looks even hotter on film!

God bless American automobile innovation! We're finally catching up with the guys overseas, and actually giving the American public cars that they want and that they can be proud of!
