New American Bible, Saint Joseph Edition
John 6, 51-59 If you have a Bible you might want to look this up. After he completes the teaching, he says
verse 53, "Amen, amen, I
say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you."
Now, I understand you are saying this is to be taken as a "symbol"
However, In
verses 60 - 61 "Then many of his disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew
that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you?"
Does this sound as though Jesus was setting up a "symbol".
Verse 66, "As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their
former way of life and no longer accompanied him. "
They didn't like what Jesus was saying to them.
