Does anyone have any search engineering/promotion tips or tricks to share?

I've been involved with this part of the industry for a few years but as the search engine algorithms change so does our methods of achieving high rankings. Personally, I've found updating a site on a regular basis works well for yahoo and msn and increasing your inbound links for google.

hmm after a few weeks of this being left empty i take it most of you dont have a clue what im on about.

oh well.

in my opinion anyone who wants to make a go of their site should have some knowledge of search engines, otherwise why bother making a site that isn't going to be seen?

For a start on SEO I would recommend reading as much material on SEO that is available on google.

Things like the ten top tips of web design will help people optimize pages for publication and maximum exposure.

Linking in is how google and other search engines rank sites, so the more "valuable" incoming links you have the better off your site will return.
Link farms were popular about 18 months ago to encourage links but google seems to have caught onto that and changed its algorythyms ..don't mind my spelling.........

The best thing to do is to exchange links with like minded sites. Another secret I use is to link to the oppositions site. For some reason and the answer will be available in SEO info pages, it works. Even if they do not link back to you.

Do not call pages of links 'links.htm' call it 'resources.htm' or 'moreinformationhtm'

Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that do not affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines. At least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

www.google.com...

For each page you are writing list keywords that people will use when searching for your page. When writing the content and body of the page include all those words in the text.

There is a link (I have just forgotten it at the moment) to a page that if you input a word or place, the search results on that page will show you associated words and exactly what people have searched for over the past month.

Metatag the page with description and keywords, keeping the keywords to ONLY the main few words that identify the site and people will be searching for. For example a page called grandcanyon.htm about the grand canyon my keywords would be "grand, canyon" and thats it.
remember all the words in your body will be included in search results anyway so it is no use loading the meta keywords again.

Check and verify the pages html, many bots cannot read badly written or wrong html and will leave it be.

Use a webalizer or statistics page to check exactly what is going on with the pages, who is visiting how often, where from and what with. This is valuable information to keep "tweaking" your page.

Subscribe to a good search engine optimisation online mag. Site pro is one I get in my inbox to peruse for hot tips.

Take a look at forums that are specifically designed for SEO like webmaster world and a few other search engine watch and the like. There is always plenty of tips to pick up on those sites about the search engines and how to get a good placement....

Theres more tips but I am rather tired at this time of night and google has much more info than me from this point anyway.....
